Years before former Interior minister John Michuki banned Chinkororo group, deputy President William Ruto had encountered their wrath during a campaign trail.
Amid heated political temperatures in the larger Gusii region, Ruto, who was then campaigning for Raila Odinga, dared political bigwig Simon Nyache and attended a rally at Nyamarambe.
During the rally, rival supporters of Nyachae, who was in President Mwai Kibaki's camp, descended on ODM supporters.
And Ruto, then the Eldoret North MP, was pierced with arrows and had his trouser torn in the skirmishes that police failed to handle.
Sensing danger, former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara, rashed Ruto to a waiting helicopter for Nairobi.
Having been badly injured, Ruto flew for treatment without shoes which he had lost to suspected Chinkororo militia.
Later on, Nyachae admitted using the sect to 'discipline' his opponents whom he accused of disrespecting him.
Redcently when he toured the region, Ruto jokingly asked Chinkororo members to make peace with him by returning the shoes.
