The nationwide protests against the brutal murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri kicked off in earnest in the country early this week.

But the demonstrations took an interesting angle in Mombasa County when political arch-rivals joined lawyers, rights groups, disabled and women groups, taxi operators in condemning the deaths.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Senator Omar Hassan put their political differences aside to join in the demos against extra-judicial killings and the murder of the trio.

The Senator has in recent times become a thorn in the flesh to the governor and his administration, and has even taken the battle to Cord leader Raila Odinga.

Due to the low profile Joho has kept in politics during the holy month of Ramadhan, he has not been responding to the razor-sharp criticisms from the Senator, only choosing to respond to him through aides, proxies and his communication director Richard Chacha.

The two friends-turned-foes were seen consulting together, joining hands in a noble cause that has previously affected Mombasa and the Coast region as a whole.

There have been many cases of extrajudicial killings in the Coast region for the years running from 2009 to date.

According to the Star, the leaders unanimously called for the immediate sacking and resignation of Inspector General of Police Boinnet and Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery.

"We also condemned the extrajudicial killings and disappearance of many other victims from the Coast region and petition the police on the same,"said Joho via his Facebook account.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words and in a rare show of public unity, the two leaders were photographed heads together, a thing that has not been witnessed in the county in recent times.

Indeed, the protests were a blessing in disguise to Mombasa residents.
