Drama erupted at the Mombasa County Stadium on October 2015 after the then Nyali MP Hezron Awiti stormed out of the Mashujaa Day Celebrations.
Awiti claimed the then Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba who was present, had made "disrespectful utterances" against him.
Bedzimba, who was planning to defend his seat in the August 2017 general elections, spoke immediately after Awiti and asked him to drop his gubernatorial ambitions since he was is not fit to lead Mombasa.
“It is better for you to stay with us in parliament where we can legislate. Where you are going is high waters which you cannot swim through,” he told Awiti.
Awiti shortly after said "I cannot sit and listen to someone talking disrespectfully about me," before storming off the dais, got into his vehicle and sped off.
On his part, the then Mombasa County commissioner Nelson Marwa slammed the two leaders, saying it was too early to engage in politics yet there were important issues affecting residents.
During the general elections in 2017, Governor Hassan Ali Joho floored Awiti to retain his seat.
