The year 1983 remains one of the lows of Zachary Onyonka, the former powerful Foreign Affairs minister who would later pass on in 1996.
During a fiery campaign episode during that year, recalls Prof Nyachieo Bogonko, Onyonka had pitched tent in Kisumu-Migori junction at Kitutu West constituency to woe voters.
Apparently, his main challenger, John Bosco Mboga, had left the scene minutes earlier in a territory that was identified as one of his strongholds.
While campaigning, Onyonka was confronted by a rival supporter, Ouru Ndege, who tried to attack him using a sword, a move that prompted Onyonka's guards to open fire.
Killing the opponent instantly, Onyonka however did not have a vehicle that could immediately evacuate him from the region.
And a Matatu driver, one Joseph Nyambariga from Bonchari, drove the besieged minister in his vehicle christened Boringo na Nagi Express to safety.
Onyonka would later be acquitted of murder and would later be reinstated to cabinet by retired President Daniel Moi.
