In 2017, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama clashed with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Wavinya Ndeti being the party's Machakos gubernatorial candidate.
Muthama wanted the county's former Deputy Governor Benard Kiala to be the Wiper's candidate for the seat but his hopes were cut short after Ndeti ditched her Chama Cha Uzalendo party for Kalonzo's.
Muthama was later quoted in a church stating that Machakos County was better off with Governor Mutua than Wavinya Ndeti.
In his speech, Muthama said Machakos residents would cry if they remove Mutua and replace him with Wavinya Ndeti.
"Wavinya, Wavinya, Masaku munye Mutua mwikie Wavinya mukaia na yimwe muvingite yingi, loosely translated as [Wavinya, Wavinya, Machakos you want to replace Mutua with Wavinya, you will cry with one eye while closing the other]," Muthama said.
Unknown to him, he was indirectly campaigning for the then incumbent Governor Alfred Mutua who trounced his opponents with a landslide.
It's no doubt Muthama is a force to reckon in Wiper and his political wave is immeasurable mostly in Machakos.
However, Muthama has lately shifted his political support to Ndeti for unknown reasons.
In an interview on a local radio, Muthama had claimed Wavinya Ndeti should be elected governor since her roots in Machakos are known, unlike Mutua who is a 'foreigner'.
"We know Wavinya Ndeti, we know where she comes from but about Mutua, we know nothing about him,"
