While campaigning at Migori-Kisumu junction in his Kitutu West constituency, Onyonka's bodyguards were forced to shoot at a rival supporter, who had threatened to kill the minister.

And Onyonka, without his vehicle and official driver, had to rush to a waiting matatu losing his shows in the process.

Little known Joseph Nyambariga, a matatu driver along the route, rescued the minister as as angry supporters bayed for his blood.

Later, Onyonka was arrested and charged with murder at Kodiaga prison where he spent two months clearing his name.

Apparently, Onyonka was elected in absentia after beating his rival John Mboga and was subsequently recalled to cabinet by president Daniel Moi.

For close to 30 years, Onyonka controlled Gusii politics. His son, Richard Onyonka, is the current Kitutu Chache South MP.
