Just like his predecessor Daniel Moi, retired President Mwai Kibaki was not a fan of boarding military aircraft throughout his tenure in office.

In fact, even his trips outside the country were countable, much less that President Uhuru Kenyatta's combined trips in the last five years.

But after the closely contested elections in 2007, Kibaki would embark on meet people tour in 2009 across Gusii region.

And one of the regions that the President was earmarked to visit were various trading centers in the vast region.

When he started his tour, Kibaki visited a number of regions and his final rally was set to take place at Marani trading center in Kisii County.

After addressing a mammoth crowd, Kibaki boarded a military chopper perhaps to his Nairobi home to take a rest.

Minutes after take off, the faulty helicopter crashed, destroying nearby building at Marani Primary School.

And a scared president was seen running off the helicopter with his bodyguard in an incident which was not largely covered by the media due to heated campaigns.

The military would evacuate him to another aircraft, describing the incident as 'major engine failure'.
