It may sound crazy but toilet papers played an important function in 80s and 90s other than the intended one.
Before Kenneth Matiba's burial in Murang'a on Thursday, a number of Kenyans are aware of how another KANU detainee Koigi Wamwere wrote manuscripts of his novels from Kamiti in a toilet paper.
However, a narration by Raila Odinga on how he wrote his wife Ida a letter on a toilet paper to inform her about deteriorating health of fellow detainee Kenneth Matiba shocked mourners.
"Police guarding me would exchange with those of Matiba. And one officer, General Mwangi, informed me about the situation.
"With little to do, I wrote Ida a message on toilet paper and handed it to the officer. I asked her to inform Edith that the husband was sick," said Raila as mood turned pensive in the funeral.
According to him, the late minister was enjoying good health and even used to clean a section of Kamiti prison before suffering a stroke.
It is Raila's painful narration that made President Uhuru Kenyatta to promise to set a committee with the veteran politician that will identify heroes.
