He is one of the public figures that dominated the country's politics during the 24-year reign of retired President Daniel Moi.

Mark Too, 64, who died in January 2017 after a short illness at St. Luke's Hospital in Eldoret town. He had been rushed to the facility under critical condition earlier that fateful day.

What many have not known is that Mark Too once saved the current President Uhuru Kenyatta's political career.

In 2001, only one year to 2002 general elections, then President Moi realized that it was time for Uhuru Kenyatta to be his successor but that could not be possible because he (Uhuru) was not in parliament.

Mzee Moi stealthily embarked on a scheme to get him nominated to Parliament with a view of appointing him to the Cabinet which would put him in good stead to contest the presidency on the KANU ticket.

KANU was tasked to get a slot in parliament to pave way for Uhuru's nomination and Mark Too happened to be the man to give up on the seat.

With Too out of the way, Moi duly nominated Uhuru and appointed him Local Government Minister, this time at the expense of the late Joseph 'JJ' Kamotho.

The retired President then hand-picked Uhuru to run for the presidency on a Kanu ticket leading to the 2002 bruising battle with Narc’s Mwai Kibaki.

Uhuru lost and readily conceded defeat, promising a comeback one day which was achieved in 2013 elections where he started his presidency to date.

After that incident, Mark Too kept a low profile which many saw it was meant not to offend his political mentor, Mzee Moi.

President Kenyatta would later recall in Mark's funeral that situation.

"I remember when Mzee Moi called me and said that Mark Too had agreed to vacate his seat. I was confused but I just said it is okay,” President Kenyatta told attentive mourners at a burial held at Mark Too's farm on the outskirts of Eldoret town.
