The morning after pill, also known as postinor 2 or simply P2 is a tablet that used by women as a contraceptive. It is supposed to be taken after a session of unprotected sex and within a period of 72 hours after the act. The pills come in two. You can either take one after within 24 hours of unprotected sex and the second 24 hours later. You can also choose to take 2 tablets at a go and within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. If taken correctly as prescribed, then it can prevent pregnancy. But there are some instances where taking P2 may lead to complications or severe side effects.

When you are already pregnant

You are not advised to take the morning after pills when you are already pregnant. If you do, then you have higher chances of ending up with ectopic pregnancy. In other words, the baby will not survive. You will suffer a miscarriage.

When you suffer from the following diseases

When you are suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease like stroke, breast cancer etc., then you should not take p2. If you must take, then you need to first consult a doctor. It is not recommended you take the morning after pills when you under other medications. 

When you experience vaginal bleeding

According to a reproductive health site www.nps.org.au, you are not supposed to take p2 when you are experiencing vaginal bleeding. You need to see your doctor for advice before you take p2.

When it has expired

You should check the expiry date before you take the pills. If they pills have expired, they might cause you more harm than good.
