Born into a political and wealthy family, most people would expect that President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta as a young man enjoyed many special privileges owing to his social status.
What is unknown to many is that Uhuru, the fourth and current President of Kenya, hustled like any other young man, at one time working as a bank teller and 'baba mboga'.
Uhuru is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya.
Upon his graduation from United States-based Amherst College in 1985, Uhuru's first job was as a teller at Kenya Commercial Bank Kipande House branch, Nairobi.
In a past interview, he revealed that he used to work for a humble monthly salary of Sh3,000, an equivalent of Sh100 pay per day.
"It wasn’t an easy thing balancing cash as a teller, but at the end of the day it taught you how to stand on your own without necessarily having a shadow behind your back," he said speaking to Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi in a past interview.
After working briefly as a banker, the young Uhuru left KCB and founded a company to source and sell horticulture produce.
Armed with a small pick-up, he used to collect vegetables all the way from Meru County and then package them for export.
"I would personally fetch the produce in a pick-up truck and learned how to evade speeding miraa vans on the busy Nairobi-Meru higway," he recalled, speaking to Kamau Ngotho, a local journalist.
His company Wilhan Kenya Limited became quite successful.
Uhuru later joined politics rising to the highest office in the land.
