In January 2016, when he was Kabete MP, Waititu made headlines after he kicked a protester following a scuffle with rowdy youth at the Mombasa High Court.

The tussle ensued after Waititu, who alongside other politicians from Kiambu were giving a statement outside the court, pushed away a placard being held by one of the protesters who was standing at the court’s steps.

The man, who seemed irked by the governor’s move, elbowed the Jubilee politician in the stomach before Waititu retaliated by kicking him.

Waititu had travelled to Mombasa to attend a court hearing in support of Anthony Njoroge Mburu, a blogger who had been charged with misusing a communication gadget.

Mburu had been sued by Seacross Farm, a large-scale poultry farm in Kwale County, after he linked the farm to accusations that Kiambu Governor William Kabogo was facilitating the influx of cheap eggs from outside the county, forcing local farmers out of business.

The youth had gathered outside the court to protest the decision by Judge Nicholas Njagi to dismiss the suit against Mburu over lack of evidence.

They argued that Mburu’s allegations were negatively affecting their poultry farming business, which they said is their sole source of livelihood.

Police officers had to intervene to calm the situation.

When reached for comment, Waititu defended his actions, arguing that he was retaliating against the provocation by the youth.
