Speaking on Wednesday, the youths said that the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report is misleading as they are yet to find those jobs and many of them are still unemployed.

"The government should not just cook figures just to show us that they are addressing the unemployment problem. We need to see impact on the ground if at all there are such jobs," Charles Mulwa, a Kiandutu youth said.

They argued that even the NYS slum clean-up programme that had provided a temporary relief to a number of youths was no more.

"If they are using NYS figures to come up with this report, they should know that those were just temporary jobs and most of those who had been hired are currently jobless," Faith Wairimu, a beneficiary of the 2015 NYS programme from Jamhuri said.

Martin Waweru, a resident of Majengo estate urged the government to focus on long-term measures aimed at alleviating the unemployment problem.

"Focusing on short-term measures will just offer short-term solutions and the problem will still remain. We need some serious projects as well as empowerment so that we can be independent. Not just clearing the streets," he said.
