The one-term governor seemed keen in caving his own political dominance away from Jubilee which enjoyed great support in the county.

His decision even landed him a position in the opposition NASA as one of the co-principals in the run up to 2017 elections.

Isaac Ruto joined politics in 1997 when he was overwhelmingly elected as Member of Parliament for Chepalungu constituency through KANU.

He later served as assistant minister for education and agriculture until 2001 when the then president Moi appointed him as Minister of Environment and Natural resources.

He represented the people of Chepalungu as their MP until 2013 when he was elected Bomet Governor on a URP party ticket.

In April 2013, the university of Nairobi political science graduate was elected the first chairman of the council of governors through majority vote.

He was known as a champion of more finances be disbursed to counties through his ‘Pesa mashinani’ slogan which later gave birth to his Chama cha Mashinani party.

Although he lost in the August 2017 polls, he announced his support for Jubilee's presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta during the repeat presidential election on September 26.

This is despite having campaigned for NASA's Raila Odinga be elected president on August 2017.

Raila lost the August poll but the Supreme Court overturned the Uhuru's win resulting to a repeat presidential poll.
