The former defender, born 45 years ago in Nairobi, is believed to have featured 104 times for Harambee Stars between 1993 and 2009; though there are no official records to confirm the number of matches he donned the National team’s jersey.

The 1.93 metre tall Otieno made his national team debut for Kenya against Zaire in 1993 at the age of 19.

He was the Captain of Kenya during the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia. Stars have never qualified for another continental showpiece since then.

At the Club front, he played for AFC Leopards and Tusker, before spending most of his playing career at Santos Football Club in South Africa.

Otieno represented the South African club in over 300 matches and scored more than 30 goals, between 1997 and 2011. The defender aided Santos to South Africa’s League title win in 2001-2002.

He also briefly played for Cleveland City Stars in the United States of America on loan from Santos before officially hanging his boots from the game in 2011.

He later served as one of Harambee Stars assistant coaches under different head coaches starting 2012, before being sacked in November last year.

The former Central defender currently runs the KickOff to Hope Soccer Academy - Kenya in Jericho, Nairobi.
