The former ruling party KANU National Executive Council (NEC) has mandated its chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi to work out a deal with either the Opposition or the ruling Jubilee Party and provide guidance on who to support for the presidency in the August polls, the Standard newspaper has reported.
Speaking to the media on Thursday shortly after the NEC meeting, Moi noted that the party is set to announce on who it will back in the presidential elections in the next two weeks, adding that presently KANU does not have a preferred candidate.
“I have been mandated to talk to everybody and keep all the options open. As at now we do not have a preferred candidate, but in about two weeks, we will meet again for me to give a report on who to support,” he said.
“In making this choice, we will of course be guided, importantly by who between the Jubilee and the Opposition presidential candidates has the best interest for us and the country,” he added.
The announcement comes just days after the party's Secretary General Nick Salat confirmed that Kanu had joined the National Super Alliance (NASA) being fronted by ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi.
The party supported President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2013 general elections.
