Siaya Senator James Orengo now wants the government to beef up the security of the National Super Alliance (NASA) flagbearer Raila Odinga.

Speaking to the media in Nairobi, Orengo claimed that eight military-trained police officers have been trailing the Opposition leader since Monday.

“We also have information that prior to the release of the eight, a number of the trainees had from time-to-time made to shadow and trail the NASA presidential candidate Hon. Raila Odinga and other co-principals in their daily political activities,” said Orengo.

"This is not an idle statement. It is our deep and genuine concern about the security of Raila and other opposition chiefs."

The Senator asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to ensure the safety of Raila, warning the Head of State and the IG will be held responsible should anything happen to the former Prime Minister.

"We are challenging  President Kenyatta to assure the country of the safety of the NASA leader and that of his co-principals. We put the Head of State on notice that we will hold him solely responsible for any lapses in Raila's security," Orengo told the media.

The former Lands Minister said NASA has written to IG Boinnet about the officers allegedly trailing the ODM leader, adding that their concerns should be taken seriously as 'there is a constitutional ramification if anything happens to a presidential candidate."
