Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is a man who has seen it all in the political world.
Having served as the government spokesman for eight years from 2004 to 2012, he has developed a thick skin to critics and haters.
Mutua is remembered for both good and bad things. One of the good things that he is remembered for is having pioneered the patriotic campaign dubbed, “Najivunia Kuwa Mkenya.”
One of the bad things that he is remembered for is having blatantly denied existence of deaths resulting from drought in Kenya in 2011. According to www.wikipedia.com, this act earned him the name, “Government Spin Doctor.”
When he left the job as the government spokesman, Mutua vied for the Machakos County gubernatorial seat and won with landslide. He was elected on a Wiper Democratic Movement Party ticket. In 2016 having cited displeasure with working under Wiper party, he launched his own party christened Maendeleo Chap Chap. Wiper members saw this as an act of betrayal and that is how the motion to impeach him was hatched.
Sponsored by Stephen Muthuka, the impeachment motion was filed at the Machakos County Assembly having been signed by 46 out of 59 MCAs. On the day of voting for or against the impeachment motion, only 27 members were present. The remaining 32 members had traveled to Tanzania. Even though 26 voted to impeach him, the number was too low to legally impeach him.
