Omar Mwinyi, the serving legislator for Changamwe Constituency, was elected to the eleventh parliament under the ODM ticket.
He was born on August 1, 1958 in the then Coast province.
Mwinyi has had an equally strong educational and professional background. He is a professionally trained teacher who taught in Merereni Primary School in Malindi between 1979-1981, before being promoted to the rank of Deputy Head teacher in 1981 at Mwajibu Primary School, Mombasa.
He later climbed the ranks to the position of Head teacher at Chaani Primary School in 1987, before being transferred to Bomu Primary School to serve under a similar rank.
His political career began when he was elected to serve as the national chair of the Islamic Party of Kenya (IPK) in the year 1991, before the party merged with Ford-Kenya.
Prior to the hotly contested 2013 campaigns, Mwinyi consulted with local elders about his manifesto, before getting into the race.
He vied for the legislative seat in 2013 beating other aspirants by a narrow margin.
After being sworn in as the Changamwe legislator, Omar was appointed as a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Works, Roads and Transport, a position that he still holds to date.
He has expressed interest to defend the same legislative seat in the upcoming general elections under the ODM ticket.
