He was elected to the 11th legislative House on Wiper Party in the March 2013 after a hotly contested campaign.

In the current National Assembly, Robert is a Member of the House committee on Procedure and House Rules . According to Mzalendo online, Hon Mbui has spoken 268 times in Parliament since his swearing.

Hon Mbui has a rather strong educational background. He holds a Masters degree in Strategic Management from Kenya Institute of Management and a first degree from Kenyatta University.

Kathiani residents consider Mbui as a very vocal legislator out to represent them in matters affecting them. In mid-November 2015, Hon Mbui is on record calling for the disbandment of the NACADA commission for alleged failure to end alcohol-related deaths in his constituency and across other parts of the country.

The Kathiani legislator is one of the loyal Wiper party legislators from the Ukambani stronghold.

He is also one of the dreaded Jubilee critics who has in several occasions criticized the ruling coalition for failing to deliver pledges in its manifesto.

For instance, in the 2015 month long teacher's strike, Mbui blasted the Presidency for neglecting teachers.

Back to his political career, Hon Mbui is still unsettled on whether to defend his current post come 2017 or to contest for the higher position of county governor.

In May this year, a section of residents from his Kathiani sub-county endorsed him to unseat governor Mutua.
