The 2022 presidential race will have the highest number of candidates in the history of Kenya's politics. You can take that to the bank!
The untimely death of the National Super Alliance (NASA) has made the next presidential race an open field and will see an influx of contenders. The disintegration of NASA means they will not front a single candidate.
All top leaders in the coalition are now laying plans to run solo. This means more candidates will come out of NASA.
Starting with Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, his party officials from Western Kenya had earlier declared that he will be their presidential candidate come 2022 and nothing will put a stop to that. The party's secretary general Barrack Muluka earlier revealed that the entire western region will rally behind Mudavadi.
Senator Moses Wetangula speaking in Kisumu early last month also confirmed that he will be in the race to the presidency in 2022. He asked Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi to support him. "Without any fear of contradiction, I will be on the ballot in 2022 and am asking my brother Raila, my brother Kalonzo and my brother Mudavadi to let me try this horse this time."
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will also be running for the top seat as he revealed during a meeting dubbed 'Kamba Unity' last week. Kalonzo said he will rebrand Wiper to One Kenya Movement (OKM) to soar him to the presidency.
Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga may not appear on the ballot. But this is another reason why there will be more candidates in the race. Uhuru and Raila are national figures with a fanatical following and this has always been a threat to other hopefuls. Their absence in 2022 gives hopes to other politicians eyeing the top seat.
