84-year-old Murang'a gubernatorial hopeful Jerad Kabugi has bowed out of the governorship race.

Speaking on Saturday, Kabugi defended his decision to shelve his political ambitions, announcing that he would be instead drumming up support for the incumbent governor Mwangi Wa Iria of Jubilee Party.

“This time round, I thought that I should give a try to the governor seat but now I have changed my mind and decided to just support the party,” he said.

He was, however, quick to point out that he had met all the requirements.

"I had met all the requirements but thought that it was more important to lobby for the Jubilee government’s re-election rather than my own votes", he stated.

Kabugi was set to vie as an independent candidate and had hoped to connect all homes with water if elected.

“All our water is now syphoned to Nairobi while our people are still fetching water from rivers,” he noted.

He vied unsuccessfully for the Gatanga parliamentary seat in 1992 and 1997.
