Ex-Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba has now called for the amendment of the constitution to create the position of leader of Opposition.
Speaking on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Intercontinental Hotel, Namwamba contended that there was need for the law to be changed to accommodate the leader of Opposition and his deputy.
He added that the two would then be allowed to sit in the Senate as specially elected Senators.
“A democracy must have a stable government and a strong opposition to keep the government in check and that is why we propose the consolidation of the Opposition and the creation of the official leader of the Opposition and his deputy,” he said.
Namwamba observed that the current dispensation risks weakening the country's democracy.
“We need to have a fresh relook at the question of winner-takes-all or loser-loses-all in order to strengthen our democracy. In the coming weeks, the council will be unveiling its proposal blueprint on this matter,” he remarked.
