Former Ghanaian football ace Stephen Appiah is said to have disagreed with Sport Personalities of the year (SOYA) organising officials at the last minute over his pay.
Appiah was supposed to grace the occasion as the chief guest of the event carried out on Wednesday.According to Ghanaian sport site ghanasoccernet.com, the former soccer star disagreed with the officials as he had requested more than doubled the agreed sum fee of $2,000.Speaking to soccer24, he said that it would be better off if he had done the event for free.''It doesn’t look good for my image to attend an event for US$ 2,000 dollars," Said Appiah.''I'm not the guy who talks too much about money so I told the guy that I would prefer to go to the event for free. I have done many events that I didn’t even take anything,'' Appiah added.Appiah said that his brand has been kept in shape so that others would sacrifice.''Trust me it’s not about money, but some of us have kept in shape and branded ourselves so people must sacrifice also because there’s a reason why Appiah is called for an event and not other ex-footballers,'' he said.SOYA organizers settled for former Kenyan international Mike Okoth as Appiah’s replacement.
