Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli does not want any leader from Western to contest for the presidency in 2022.
Atwoli on Sunday said most regions including Western are still economically impoverished and their residents can't raise the required money to challenge other leaders especially those from Central Kenya.
Atwoli, making reference to Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja said leaders from Western have little chance of ascending to the presidency in 2022.
"My own people from Western Kenya, Senator Sakaja, let's fight for economic empowerment," the trade unionist said.
"We need regional economic empowerment and we can suspend presidency for now. Let us make regions like Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western, Eastern, Coast and North Eastern to be economically viable first," he added.
He spoke three months after Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula declared he will be at the ballot in 2022.
Another potential leader from the region to contest for the presidency during the poll in ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi although he has not publicly declared that he will vie for the seat.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya also says he will vie for the presidency during the election in which Kenyans will elect Kenya's fifth president. Western region is largely an position zone.
