Nicholas Biwott’s death could dent Deputy Presidency William Ruto’s ascendancy to power if political dynamics in Rift Valley remain the same, says Gideon Mamboleo.

Considered as one of the pillars of retired President Daniel Moi’s regime, the man popularly known as ‘Total Man’ died a week ago and was buried on Thursday at his ancestral home in Elgeyo-Marakwet.

And his death could sabotage Ruto’s plans given his recent reconciliatory tone that aimed at uniting Rift Valley people behind one person.

“He may have retired but his influence as an elder would have cooled political temperatures in Rift Valley but that will not happen,” Observes Mamboleo.

“In my opinion, Ruto needed him most given the tough task ahead because he had started warming up for him. It is a personal loss.”

An ever dynamic region, Rift Valley is experiencing political power struggles between Ruto, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Bomet governor Isaac Rutto.

Both Ruto and Moi have already declared their intention to contest in 2022 presidential election, a move that could substantially affect voting dynamics in the country.
