During the 2017 general elections, Uasin Gishu, the home of champions, was one of the counties which experienced a tight gubernatorial race.
Jubilee party conducted its nominations and the county tycoon Bundotich Kiprop popularly known as Buzeki lost to governor Jackson Mandago who had earlier claimed that DP Ruto's handlers were sabotaging his reelection bid.
After losing during the nominations, Buzeki went opted to face off with Mandago in the August 8 poll on an independent ticket and as witnessed during the much-heated battle across the county, the tycoon conducted a ‘well oiled ‘ campaign. However, all did not go well for Buzeki and the incumbent retained the seat.
Mandago garnered 193,606 votes against Buzeki's 148,121. Uasin Gishu residents are now waiting for 2022 general elections and as the constitution dictates, Mandago will not be seeking re-election as he will have served his two terms. It Will be a good opportunity for Buzeki to clinch the seat.
Here are two reasons why Buzeki lost to Mandago;
Mandago's performance.
During his first term in office, Mandago was one of the top performing governors and his service to Uasin Gishu residents could be seen, smelt and felt by everyone in Uasin Gishu.
During his tenure, Eldoret was able to grow and now has more roads and walkways.The health sector in the county was supported and boosted by Mandago’s regime.
Support by County and National leaders.
Mandago enjoyed the support of vocal legislators Oscar Sudi (Kapseret) and Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills). The two MP's used their influence to rally their supporters and the electorate to vote for Mandago. They, therefore, played a major role in Mandago’s victory.
After Mandago won the Jubilee party ticket, the support of Deputy President William Ruto was evident and the DP publicly asked Buzeki to drop his bid and support the governor.
Nasa leaders also endorsed the incumbent hence making him more popular among their supporters.
