The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is currently facing a deep crisis worse than that of the defunct ECK due to the back to back resignation of its commissioners.
Despite the commission being roasted by many for conducting a sham election, I believe that there are people who might have tampered with the 2017 elections but there is only one man I believe stayed true to his job, the commission’s Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
This is why:
He tried to sack the commission’s CEO, Ezra Chiloba twice.
It is on record that a leaked memo from the commission showed that Wafula Chebukati was uncomfortable with Chiloba and tried to send him home before the repeat election in October last year but was defeated by commissioners who wanted Chiloba to stay.
However, he ensured that Chiloba was on leave during the elections and together with three other commissioners he has managed to send Chiloba on a compulsory leave.
He openly said that he could not guarantee free and fair repeat presidential election:
Chebukati openly admitted that the environment within IEBC was hostile to a credible election and as a result, he could not ensure a free and fair election.
He at one time delegated his Chairmanship to Deputy Chair Nkatha Maina:
It is also on record that Chebukati once wrote a notice appointing Maina as Chairperson in the absence of the Chairman, this shows that his conscience could not allow him to preside over a sham election.
Finally, think that Chebukati has always wanted to do the right thing at the commission but has always been overshadowed by some individuals serving personal interests.
