The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) has added voice to criticisms against NASA's calls for economic boycott.

Speaking through chairman Stephen Mutoro, Cofek said that there could be devastating repercussions if the boycott call is followed.

Mutoro argued that other sectors of the economy were going to be adversely hit by the move.“The security of distributors of the boycotted products won’t be guaranteed. As such, the first casualty will be transport companies. Given the perishable nature of some of the products, the manufacturers will reduce production,” said Mutoro.Mutoro believes that such a boycott will only lead manufactures into heavy losses that will eventually bring about layoffs and a fall in the economy.

“The problem with political consumer boycotts is that they are divisive and will be politically fought fiercely by the other protagonist,” added the Cofek leader.
