The Njavungo Council of Elders in Taita Taveta County has asked the National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders to call off the anti-IEBC demonstrations saying they will hurt the country.
The elders instead want the opposition to start talks with the electoral commission in a bid to resolve the election impasse.Their co-ordinator Mnjala Mwaluma said they are opposed to the demos as they would raise the already heightened political temperatures and lead to chaos and lawlessness. He further noted that the prevailing political uncertainty was not good for investment.“We are opposed to demos because Kenyans may lose their lives and property could be destroyed. We call on the electoral commission, the opposition and Jubilee to begin talks in order to address the unresolved issues,” said Mwaluma, as quoted by the Nation.“We do not want to experience another round of violence. Street demonstrations are a recipe for chaos and that should be avoided at all costs,” he added. The coordinator said the Wafula Chebukati-led commission should also ensure political parties were in agreement and satisfied with how it was readying to manage the October 26 repeat poll. The elders asked the IEBC to ensure its systems and officials handle the rerun in a free, transparent and credible manner to avoid chaos and unrest after the outcome. They also want Chebukati to ensure that all stakeholders as well as NASA and Jubilee are involved in the preparations to foster transparency and public confidence.
