It all began when President Uhuru Kenyatta made his first visit to Mombasa shortly after being sworn in as President.

During his final day of the tour, Governor Hassan Joho publicly took on the President head-on as he claimed the head of state visited the Mombasa without informing him. He said as governor, he should have been briefed about the visit.

Then came the Waitiki Scheme land issue where Mr Joho accused Uhuru of discriminating against Coast residents by telling them to buy the scheme's land against developments in other regions where government dished out cash to squatters to enable them buy land for their settlement.

After the pull and push between Joho and Uhuru over claims the president has sidelined Coast in development, some of Joho's businesses were shut. His bodyguards were recalled as the State sought to withdraw his gun license. He was only saved by court when he challenged the legality of the State actions against him.

Although the business entities were reopened, the county chief recently claimed some government institutions had received strict instructions from State House to direct clients not to transact business with the formerly closed business entities.

Then came the mass defections by Coast elected leader including Kilifi County’s Gideon Mung’aro and Kazungu Kambi, Mombasa County’s Suleiman Shahbal and Ananiah Mwaboza, Kwale County’s Zainabu Chidzuga, Khatibu Mwashetani and Gonzi Rai.

The opposition accused Jubilee of dishing out cash to Cord leaders to defect to the ruling coalition.

Now, the latest development- Joho on Tuesday met Amani National Congress leaders Musalia Mudavadi in Mombasa.

The meeting has elicited sharp reactions from across the political divide. The two met less than a week after Mr Mudavadi was crowned Luhya Spokesperson.

So, what is the implication of this?

Joho, as the country moves towards August will remain a key player in the opposition politics.

He is a principal player within Cord and the decisions he will make will greatly impact the politics at the Coast.

Coast resident will most likely be swayed by what he will propagate for and against.

This is why Coast elected leaders who defected to Jubilee against his (Joho) wishes will to a large extent fail the reelection test come August.
