Prophets of doom may get a shock of the century if Mt Kenya region goes against all odds and rallies behind Deputy President William Ruto in 2022.
As you may agree to agree, William Ruto who is below 50 years, is not your everyday politician. He is a charismatic, tactical and an intelligent politician. Some say he is over-ambitious, but all agree he never throws his fists in the air.
When he did the unthinkable and decided to support Uhuru Kenyatta for Presidency in the run up to 2013 elections, they said that it was all about the ICC case which had somehow brought the duo together.
With Uhuru and Ruto's cases now under the carpet, doubts abound on whether the DP will support Kenyatta in his second shot for the presidency because the common denominator has since changed.
Pundits, political analysts and even village cattle dip chairmen have argued that Ruto is a day dreamer unlikely to attract any votes from Central Kenya come 2022 despite his support for Uhuru Kenyatta.
But sooner than later, Ruto will undoubtedly be Kenya's President come 2022 because he is a go-getter who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. You can call him a 'private developer' or Arap Mashamba or whatever name but his eyes seem set for the house on the hill. So far, so good, he seems to be the best replacement to Kenyatta in 2022.
Naysayers led by Governor William Kabogo will, as usual, want to say that Ruto is day-dreaming in thinking that the Mt Kenya will vote for him in 2022 but shock awaits them. Ruto has become indispensable among many Mt Kenya voters.
'They can only vote one of their own' seems to be an old narrative especially among the youthful voters. Actually, many are so eager to vote for Ruto in 2022 as a way of telling him thank you.
If there is one thing that many voters in Mt. Kenya would not want to mess around with, is DP Ruto. This is evident with the kind of uproar Kabogo got when he claimed that Mt Kenya votes are not assured for Ruto in 2022. This is without mentioning what nominated Senator Paul Njoroge got when he seemed to echo Kabogo's sentiments.
It is evident that in 2022, with Uhuru and without doubt Raila Odinga out of the political scene, Ruto will joy-ride rather than compete to State House. As the political landscape looks now, Ruto doesn't seem like he will have an uphill task in replacing Uhuru Kenyatta.
