Lack of a single employer for the ECDE teachers has been highlighted as the main reason their concerns are not properly addressed.

Speaking on Inooro TV, Wednesday, November 1 morning, Joe Mungai, the KNUT representative of Thika bemoaned the fact that the ECDE teachers have no single stable employer with whom any union could engage in discussions to better the working conditions of the ECDE teachers.

“Some ECDE teachers are employed with the Board of Governors, the church and others the county government. All these institutions provide different terms and it becomes difficult to negotiate.” Mungai told presenter Njoroge Githinji.

The KNUT representative regretted that ECDE teachers are poorly remunerated and work in difficult environments as opposed to teachers of young children in other countries and advised the ECDE teachers to join KNUT or form a union that would champion for their interests.

“It is sad ECDE teachers get paid poorly compared to other countries yet they play an important role in the education of the children in their formative stages. I urge them to join KNUT or form a union to champion their interests,” said Mungai.

He further called for speedy take up of ECDE training by the county governments for the ECDE education to be well streamlined.
