Whenever the name Kofi Annan is mentioned in Kenya today, the first picture that rings in people's minds is that of a peace maker who helped broker a deal during the 2007/2008 post election chaos.

As many would explain, Kofi Annan was the man who brought together two worrying parties- the Orange Democratic Movement and the Party of National Unity to chat out a path out of the violence after the disputed 2007 Presidential election.

But in Eldoret town, the name Kofi Annan is today made in reference to an estate occupied by more than 1,000 people from different ethnic backgrounds.

Located between Munyaka and Juniourate estates in the outskirts of Eldoret town, the estate's name cropped following the disastrous effects of the PEV.

In a mission to find out the reason for naming the estate after the former United Nations Secretary General, this writer spoke to Anthony Mwangi, a resident at the estate.

According to Mr Mwangi, the residents bought land there after peace was restored.

"Most of the occupants of plots and houses here were those affected by post election violence," said Mwangi.

He added: "I think the owner of this land decided to give up his land for sell after seeing the suffering of those who were homeless."

Mwangi said the place was named for the remembrance of the peace deal which helped sort out the violence.

"This place reminds me of the peace maker, even the people who live here coexist peacefully because of its name," said Mwangi.

The former UN Secretary General jetted into the country a midst violence and brought to an end a conflict which left scores dead.
