The seat for Member of county assembly (MCA) in the recent days has been attracting massive interest with many including professionals salivating for the post.
The new constitution created the position which gives additional powers to the MCA and a huge budget to control making the seat more coveted.
The MCA pocket an average of Sh250,000 per month in terms of salaries. Other perks include car grants, ward offices, mortgages and money to hire drivers, secretaries, and bodyguards. Additionally, the MCA have the task of discussing and approving a multi-million budget.
In 2016 alone, more than Sh300 billion was placed under the oversight of the 2,222 MCAs.
As if that is not enough the MCAs also have the power to impeach governors and top county executives and even approving county appointment.
Due to this emerging facts, reports have indicated that the MCA seat has already attracted over 20 aspirants per ward including professors.
Due to the influence that the ward representatives have come to possess, reports indicate that some Wards have already attracted more that 20 aspirants including Professors. For instance a few months ago nominated Senator Godliver Omondi announced that she will relinquish her post for MCA seat in Kholera Matungulu constituency.
