Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren is now accusing the national government of being behind woes farmers in the North Rift region have been going through.
According to Tiren, the Jubilee administration has been deliberately working to frustrate a farmer.
He said the government slashed budgetary allocation set aside to buy maize from farmers this season by half leading to the current delay in payment that farmers are experiencing.
“It is sad that despite the committee of Agriculture to which I am a member proposing to set aside Sh4 billion to pay farmers their dues the National government slashed the budget to Sh1.9 billion,” said Tiren in Eldoret town, Thursday.
“Why is it that when it comes to importing maize a lot of money is allocated for the same and when it comes to paying farmers who have delivered their maize to NCPB they are not paid. Are farmers lesser Kenyans?” he added.
The legislator further hit out at the government's directive to stop receiving maize from farmers.
“Kenyans consume over 3 million bags of maize per day and yet as I am talking NCPB has only 4.5 Million of bags. I read malice is this move to stop buying maize from farmers as probably there is a cartel preparing to import maize come July," claimed the MP.
