A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu county has issued a proposal they say will help end perennial problems they have been facing.
Led by the county's Kenya National Federation of Agricultural Producers (KENFAP) chairman Musa Barno, the farmers' said elected leaders should be appointed to ministerial positions and not technocrats as it is now.
“As farmers, we will be very happy if the constitution will be amended so that the President picks his ministers from elected MPs. This will help improve service delivery since they have the experience and know how to tackle the ministries,” said Barno in Eldoret, Friday.
“The days we had an MP as a minister of Agriculture we did not have any problems. We were receiving farm inputs on time and NCPB was paying us on time but since technocrats took over we have suffered allot,” added the KENFAP Uasin Gishu branch chairman.
He further condemned the Jubilee government for importing maize from Uganda yet they have failed to pay farmers who delivered their produce to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
“It is sad the government has spent Sh6 billion to import maize from Uganda and yet it has failed to pay Sh3 billion which farmers from the region owe them,” said Barno.
