Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambition is in jeopardy after details emerged that Kanu chairman Gideon Moi will endorse President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid.
Kanu is expected to officially declare support for Uhuru during its National Executive Council meeting – to be held soon.
Fresh details have emerged that Uhuru rushed to meet Gideon’s father, retired President Daniel Moi, to help him persuade Gideon to support his re-election bid.
Kanu was to hold a press conference to announce whether it will join the National Super Alliance (NASA) or field its own presidential candidate.
This was postponed after Uhuru met the former president.
If indeed Kanu agrees to support Uhuru, chances are Gideon will demand Uhuru’s backing come 2022, complicating DP Ruto’s presidential ambitions.
Both Gideon and Ruto have declared interest in vying for presidency in 2022 elections.
The two have engaged in supremacy battle for quite some time now, indicating the tension between Jubilee and Kanu in the Rift Valley.
According to the pact signed by Uhuru and Ruto before the 2013 general election, Uhuru was to rule for 10 years, then back Ruto for 2022 presidency.
This, however, is unlikely to happen if Gideon Moi vies for president at that time.
The question is, will Uhuru keep his promise and back Ruto in 2022?
