Kenya Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia is set to pocket 27 million shillings from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after qualifying for the group stages on Thursday night.
K'Ogalo qualified for the group stages after knocking out the South African club, SuperSport United, on away goal rule.
The financially incapacitated Gor will now have funds to manage their next matches as they await the draw to be conducted. Gor Mahia won the match against the backdrop of issues that many feared would have worked against the club.
4 of the club's officers were this week arrested following a disregard of court orders to pay over Ksh. 500,000 owed to a Nakuru hotel for accommodation services.
It also took the intervention of the Nairobi Governor philanthropic character to see Gor Mahia fly to South Africa for the match. The governor had to pay 30 air tickets to facilitate traveling of both players and technical team.
The team was initially stranded due to lack of enough cash to fund their flight to South Africa.
However, the club's financial woes have now been mitigated due to the award of ksh27 million to the team following their qualification for the group stages of the Confederation Cup. The team which has always been hit with a financial crisis such as unpaid allowances will now be in a position to fund their activities with much ease.
Gor is now set to participate in the African second-tier tournament after they were bundled out of the CAF Champions League by Tunisian giants, Esperence de Tunis on away goal rule.
