The government is planning to tighten the grip on vehicle imports.

This is a move aimed at fighting the amount of exhaust fumes emitted into the environment by the engines.

According to a report presented to the UN Environment Assembly on Saturday, exhaust fumes from vehicles remain the biggest air pollutant in the country.

Environment Permanent Secretary Alice Kaudia has revealed that the government will lower the imports by changing laws governing importation of vehicles in the bid to cut down carbon emissions.

"We are also strengthening the testing of vehicles to curb emissions. This will reduce the pollution and improve the quality of air that we breath," she said.

Kaudia was speaking at the third session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi.
