Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar’s surprise decision to resign as Wiper Party Secretary-General shocked many people.
Omar once considered as Kalonzo’s close ally and confidant resigned immediately after unsuccessfully contesting for the Mombasa governor seat in last year’s (2017) general election.
The former Mombasa senator in his resignation accused Kalonzo of not supporting him fully in his bid to oust Governor Hassan Joho.
He claimed that Kalonzo favored Joho who contesting on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Omar a renowned human rights activist further criticized Kalonzo and ODM party leader Raila Odinga accusing them of sidelining young politicians in the NASA coalition.
He said that there was no space for young people to grow and that Alliance was being controlled by politician’s whose main desire was to get power.
The former senator declared support for Jubilee and campaigned for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election in the October 26, 2017 repeat presidential election.
However, according to political analyst Peter Ngure, Omar’s decision to quit Wiper was a result of the defeat.
The analyst argues that the once famous and vocal senator had hopes of unseating Joho and that the defeat affected him psychological forcing him to cut ties with the opposition leaders.
Ngure notes that Omar has the chance to make a comeback in 2022 only if he mends way with his political fathers Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.
"Hassan Omar is still youthful and can make it to active politics in 2022,"Ngure said in an interview on Wednesday.
Omar is now among former vocal politician's battling for political survival in the Coast region.
