Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar is among the politicians widely expected to make it to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s new cabinet which insiders say may be named in the next few days. However, the former Wiper Secretary General may not make the cut after all.Omar who lost in the August 8 gubernatorial race to Governor Hassan Joho is banking on the outcome of his petition challenging Joho’s election on one side and the possibility of making it to Uhuru's Cabinet to save his political career. Nonetheless, the later may prove tricky.Omar may fall victim to regional balance, which is one of the factors that Uhuru will consider in crafting his next cabinet. The former Senator who dumped Raila Odinga’s NASA coalition for Uhuru is playing second fiddle to former Tourism CS Najib Balala in Mombasa.Balala is highly expected to be retained in the Cabinet as Tourism CS.Should this happen, the likelihood of Mombasa producing two CSs in Omar and Balala is minimal. In the last Cabinet, Coast region produced two Cabinet Secretaries, one from Kilifi County and another one from Mombasa. The same may be replicated in the new cabinet, with observers expecting Uhuru to rescue former Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro’s political career with a CS appointment. The Nation had recently reported that Balala will be retained in the new Cabinet, which therefore means Omar will be handed a different position like Principal Secretary (PS) or ambassador.Already, former Mombasa Deputy Governor Hazel Katana is said to be among the front-runners for PS positions, having made it to the last 120 applicants who have been shortlisted for interviews.
