A section of clerics in Machakos County want the statues erected in the honor of freedom fighters brought down because they are hampering the spread of the gospel in the region.

According to Nairobi News, the clerics have acknowledged that the governor might have had good intentions, but the statues have become a thorn in their flesh as they preach the gospel in this region. The clerics have equated the statues on the area to idol worship, and they want them to be brought down with immediate effect for the sake of God's word.

Speaking while unveiling the statues, Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua said that he had the desire of honoring fallen heroes including Paul Ngei, who was Kamba freedom fighter and Muindi Mbingu.

"Recognition of our heroes is a sign of maturity and development. We are here because of the sacrifices our heroes like Muindi Mbingu and others made during their struggle for Independence,” he said as quoted by the Local Daily.

Mutua and other leaders have been struggling to unite the community as they seek to have one of their own ascend to the nation’s top seat in the coming years.
