Former Mombasa Trade CeC Hamisi Mwaguya has said he defected from Raila Odinga’s ODM Party because he was not satisfied with the outcome of the nominations.
Mwaguya said the nominations which saw him lose to lawyer Mohammed Faki were shambolic. The senatorial aspirant lost the contest for the seat after garnering 9,106 votes against Faki’s 11,135.“I resigned from ODM immediately I was dissatisfied with the party primaries. I opted out to vie as an independent candidate,” Mwaguya said, as quoted by The Star. The lawmaker, who was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting between Mombasa aspirants and IEBC officials at Bandari College, insisted he won the nominations but was rigged out. Both candidates had declared themselves winners before Mwaguya opted to walk away from Raila’s camp to contest for the seat as an Independent candidate.According to analysts, Mwaguya will have an uphill task to contest for the seat considering the role played by political parties in the region. The aspirant will be seeking to replace Senator Hassan Omar, who will be vying for Mombasa governor.
