Days after quitting the Nairobi governorship race, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru has come out to explain why he bowed out of the contest to unseat Governor Evans Kidero.

Speaking in Riruta during a meeting with women and youths from the area, Waweru said he deferred his bid for governor to unite the Jubilee team in Nairobi.

“In this life, sacrifices have to be made. And you run to win. You never run to lose. As is now, I saw Jubilee was headed to defeat. So I took a step back and now I want to bring these people together,” Waweru said on Saturday as quoted by the Sunday Nation.

The first-time MP defended his move to abandon the gubernatorial race to defend his parliamentary seat, saying it was the best tactic to ensure Jubilee wins Nairobi’s top seat in the August polls.

“Having four people run for the party’s ticket was a bad strategy. We have to bring all our supporters together to send home the incumbent Governor Evans Kidero,” he said.

Waweru together with nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, who has also quit the governor race, were part of the ‘Team Nairobi’ composed of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru.

Sonko and Wanjiru will face former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth during JP nominations slated for April 21, 2017.
