Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has broken his silence after quitting the National Super Alliance (Nasa) for Jubilee Party.
Ruto lost to Jubilee candidate Joyce Laboso in the August 8 polls and joined President Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp, five months after joining the opposition outfit as a co-principal.
When he returned to Jubilee, the former governor stated that he had returned to “where he belongs”.
Ruto said he had decided to support the president and his deputy, despite criticising them while in Nasa over corruption and threatening devolution.
However, in an interview with The Nairobian, the former Nasa principal noted that he refused to wear a Jubilee Party cap when he defected because he was still the Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party leader.
“I have not defected; I am still the party leader of Chama Cha Mashinani,” he said.
Ruto caused some drama when he, more than once, refused to don a Jubilee party cap.
Efforts by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago to put the cap on his head bore no fruit as the former governor refused to put on the Jubilee attire during a rally in Kericho on September 8.
On why he ditched Raila Odinga’s team, Ruto said he was persuaded to support the re-election of President Uhuru because the people of Bomet needed to stay together and that 60 per cent of the people who voted for him also voted for the president.
