Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has defended his decision to support calls by the opposition for the country to conduct a referendum to change the constitution.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Tiren said a constitutional change was long overdue as it would help address several challenges the country has been facing.
The Jubilee MP pointed out that it is only a referendum that will ensure stability in the country as well as inclusivity in government.
“When we were changing the constitution, some including church leaders and politicians said it is not 100 percent perfect but we agreed that the 20 percent that was not good would be fixed later and for me, this is the right that for this,” said Tiren.
“It is only through a referendum that we will put in place an all-inclusive constitution,” he added.
The legislator who has been branded a rebel in the Jubilee party further insisted that the nation should fix several challenges before the 2022 general elections.
“We have had many challenges mainly those surrounding our electoral process and we need to look at ways to fix them, probably through a referendum so that by 2022 everything is in order,” he said.
The opposition has been calling for a constitutional change but a majority of politicians allied to the Jubilee party has opposed it claiming it is a plot by the opposition chief Raila Odinga to ascend to power through the back door.
