Led by Isaack Hassan, the commissioners announced on Wednesday that they would voluntarily leave office to pave way for reforms at the body which had earlier on stirred mixed reactions countrywide.

Despite the pressure from opposition leaders who had led the public to protest against the officers, they had hung around for a rather long time and even looked bullish in the face of the continued severe attacks.

So why in the end did they quit?

The commissioners finally agreed to leave office in a deal signed by MPs on Wednesday after being promised two things.

First was that they would not be implicated in the 'Chickengate' scandal that has plagued the body for the last three years.

They feared that being hounded out of office would weaken their bargaining power in the matter and needed assurance that once they left office, the matter would end.

Secondly, they were assured that they would still be paid all the dues they would have attracted by the end of their tenure, something in the region of Sh22 million each.

"We hope that this matter will now come to rest after a long time of uncertainty that has rocked the country over this stalemate," Bobasi MP Stephen Manoti said.
