Violent youth on Monday forced Deputy President William Ruto to cancel a planned rally at the Bungoma bus stage.
Instead, Ruto who had just left Mumias in Kakamega county held the meeting at Kanduyi market after the angry youth forced him to turn away at the main Mumias road, going through Mateka- Siritanyi then Kanduyi, the Star has reported.
The youths who were chanting NASA and ODM slogans, accused the Jubilee government of neglecting them and barred the DP from addressing them.
They also destroyed Jubilee campaign materials which had been issued by Governor Kenneth Lusaka's team.
A team of security and journalists was also forced to leave the bus park, as police had a difficult time restoring calm.
Taxi association chairman Collins Opata told the Star that they blocked the DP in a bid to express their discontent over Jubilee’s empty promises.
"We are tired of being taken for a ride by the DP. He has been here so many times yet our region still lags behind in development. We wanted to show him he is no longer needed," he said.
In his address at Kanduyi market, Ruto drummed up support for Jubilee saying the opposition was only good at holding protests.
"These people know nothing other than street protests, blowing whistles and throwing stones. They have no agenda for Kenya," he said.
He defended Jubilee’s track record in the region, citing the commissioning of Musikoma –Buyofu and Chwele Lwakhaka roads, and urged Bungoma residents to re-elect them in the forthcoming elections.
“Don’t lose track the way you did last time. Let’s work together to form the government this time round,” he said.
Ruto was accompanied by MPs Boniface Otsiula (Bumula) and Dan Wanyama (Webuye West).
