Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar sprang into the political limelight in 2013 when he defeated veteran politicians to clinch the seat in his first attempt.

His entry into the murky world of politics was expected to revolutionize Mombasa politics. However, four years down the line, the veteran human rights activist is fighting for his political life after a humiliating defeat in his quest to unseat Governor Hassan Joho.

But even as rethinks his next political move, Omar's political miscalculations is to blame for his current troubles which are now threatening his political journey.

First, Omar's decision to challenge Joho during the August 8 polls is seen as the first political blunder that the Moi University-trained lawyer committed. With Joho who is also ODM's deputy party leader seen as the main opposition man in the region, Omar's decision to vie against him sent shock waves across the region. As a result, many saw him as an enemy who is working for Jubilee to 'finish' the fiery Governor.

Two days ago, Omar resigned as Wiper Party Secretary General. Wiper which is led by NASA coalition Presidential running mate Kalonzo Musyoka is the second most popular party in the region after ODM.

The move to ditch the party will embolden his critics who will now have every ground to accuse him of being a 'Jubilee mole.

Friday, Omar moved to court to challenge the re-election of Joho, in a move that will no doubt make him make new political enemies in the opposition circles.

To many, Omar ought to have taken his time thinking about his political future by possibly reconciling with Joho but his decision to wedge a war against the 'Sultan' may permanently send him to political oblivion.
